Government Ministers have once again shown their ignorance of issues on the ground in Northern Ireland by blatently ignoring the vital security needs of Victims Campaigner William Frazer. After numerous death threats Mr Frazer applied for membership of the key persons protection scheme. Despite support from security personel and senior local politicians, Securocrat MPs have turned down the application. Below is FAIRs response:
Firstly the Chief Constables assessment that the threat to Mr Frazers life was substantial - this is a serious situation especially as the PSNI are still unable to police the South Armagh area and offer the protection needed. Secondly we would argue that Mr Frazer DOES contribute towards the objectives of the KPP scheme. By voicing the concerns of Victims and working towards a lasting just peace, Mr frazer is helping to maintain the democratic framework in Northern Ireland (one of the key criterion). We fail to see how convicted IRA terrorists are eligible for this scheme, yet an individual fighting for victims rights and justice is ignored. Perhaps the Government have an alternative agenda in refusing Mr Frazer safety?
Mr Frazer lives/works in an area where police mobility is limited and majority of police transport is still done via Helicopter. We fail to see how the minister thinks that adequate Police protection can be afforded to Mr Frazer. It is a nonsense that we will campaign to overturn.
FAIR will name others in the area who are members of the scheme, known Republican terrorists to whom Government appeasement knows no end.
