As a group composed of victims of Republican terrorism we give a guarded welcome to the recent announcement that the government is making money available to reinvestigate terrorist murders that took place over the past 35 years.
This has been something that as a group we have campaigned strongly for since our foundation, and so we are pleased to hear that the government is going to take this issue seriously and commit funds to this purpose. The amount suggested however seems to be vastly inadequate and disproportionately small.
When it is considered that £10 million + has been spent on Rosemary Nelson and Pat Finucane and the £100 million + spent on the Bloody Sunday inquiry the amount being put forward to investigate 1800 murders can only be described as a drop in the ocean.
Any investigation must be fully independent in nature because victims have been brought to a state where they no longer trust the government nor senior police officers to conduct an investigation of this significance and importance. There has to be opportunity for input from victims and their families and from support groups, to maintain confidence and trust in the process. Anything less will be unacceptable.
