27/07/05 - PROSPECT OF IRA STATEMENT DOES LITTLE FOR VICTIMS
The recent speculation in the media and yesterdays blatant manoeuvring by Tony Blair suggests that a statement of future intent from the IRA is imminent. However it is with disappointment that victims in Northern Ireland note that the statement will probably fail to meet the requirements of those who have suffered at the hands of Republican terrorism.
Victims require not only full decommissioning of all weaponry, but also a change in the mindset of the IRA terrorists themselves. No longer can these criminals claim the right to kill, main and intimidate in the name of a United Ireland. Groups such as FAIR have stated this time and time again but the message has fallen on the deaf ears of Government and Terrorist alike. The IRA must cease to exist - full stop, nothing else is acceptable.
The Governments recent attitude of acceptable terrorist/unacceptable terrorist must also change for a terrorist is the same worldwide regardless of differentiating political goals. The IRA may have slowed down their terror campaign compared to the height of the troubles but they still use the threat of violence to force their way in the political arena. This attitude reeks of 'bullying' and for our Government to pander to it adds insult to our injury.
