Newtownhamilton station must stay

In 1920 300 heavily armed IRA gunmen attacked Newtownhamilton police station, which was defended by 6 heroic RIC members. The attack was held off all night but the barracks was burned to the ground. Ever since the IRA have been trying to remove the station from Newtownhamilton with numerous bomb attacks and murder attempts by SF members.

We as a group put the Government on notice that if the IRA failed to close the station without any success - neither will they. The heroic actions of the RIC and later the RUC, and also by the men and women of the area who sacrificed their lives to defend law and order in that area, have maintained this police presence and we intend to see it maintained.

The community will not allow the government to do the work of the IRA by closing the station, especially while there is a serious terrorist situation in the area even although the government is not prepared to recognize this. We call on the Chief Constable to make Newtownhamilton a main base for police and instead of taking men out of it put more men into it, and police the border properly.
