Dossier delivered to Downing Street

This morning representatives from south Armagh victims group FAIR handed in a dossier to the Prime Minister Tony Blair No. 10 Downing Street. This submission to the Prime Minister consisted of a report containing details of people and organisations working in the IRAs highly profitable industry of customs fraud, together with photographs of contraband cigarettes, fuel and alcohol. It also contains information of a number of outlets used by the IRA located in Protestant areas that sell smuggled fuel, profits of which go towards financing IRA activity.

We are going to give the Prime Minister a few weeks to reply to this dossier, after which time if we have heard nothing back, a politician will be asking a pointed question on the floor of the House of commons in which it is possible that certain people who have been allowed to operate above the law will be named. It is our hope that this will not be necessary and that our concerns will be taken seriously.

This is of great importance and relevance to the victims of terrorism because it has been a significant means by which the IRA has financed its terrorist activities that have blighted the lives of so many, through fear and intimidation, up to the present day. It is a situation that cannot be allowed to continue. Victims have gone through enough over the last thirty years. Fear of terror must be lifted from their shoulders and from their communities. How can anyone be expected to survive and move on in this situation.
