FAIR have been reading through the Victims Commissioners recent report and our initial reaction is that we welcome some of the findings contained within it. Some of the recommendations we made to the Victims Commissioner have been mentioned and for that we are very happy. There are other recommendations we made that have not been mentioned but it is difficult to get everything you want. It will also be very interesting to know who the next Victims Commissioner will be and who will sit on the forum. We will watch closely how the next Victim Commissioner is selected.
One other aspect of the report that we would like to react to, is the cheek of Sinn Fein in their comments on compensation for UDR families. Unlike Republicans, the men and women of the UDR defended the whole community. They did not lie in a hedge with masks on, waiting to kill defenceless and innocent people. The widows of UDR men and their families did not have people out robbing banks, smuggling or building an empire of drug dealing to support them, unlike the so-called IRA volunteers and their families, who lived in luxury. For Republicans to dare make comment on UDR families receiving compensation is disgusting to say the least.
