It comes as no surprise that the army are set to pull out of South Armagh. When this happens, there will be a security vacuum in the area. Policing this is already difficult and without the secure cover offered by the army, policing will be virtually non-existent. None of the recent IMC reports have outlined a basis for this move. In fact quite the contrary has been outlined, especially in the last Northern Ireland Affairs Committee Report, which looked at terrorist linked organised crime in South Armagh. It was their opinion that South Armagh was a hotbed of such crime.
We will be seeking an urgent meeting with the NIHRC to assess the Human Rights implications of such a pull out. We aim to challenge the government under Article 2 of the Right to Life documentation. What we need in South Armagh is increased military and police presence to combat the terrorist criminals and gangsters, not less security.
