FAIR was alerted yesterday morning to the fact that property belonging to Slab Murphy was on fire. After investigation it seems that one of Slab's barn was well ablaze. Firefighters from North and South attended the blaze, supported by army and police, who were flown from Crossmaglen barracks (Please read the write up about this in our Latest News section).
As the barn in question is partly in the Republic of Ireland and partly in Northern Ireland, it will be interesting to see how any following insurance claims will proceed. The fire was started due to welding being carried out near hay at one end of the barn. The mind boggles as to what needed to be welded in a barn with hay in it. You would imagine that the welding work should have been an outside job or at least carried out in a clear area, unless the cover of a shed was needed...
The following day, whilst travelling in the area, one of Slabs henchmen tried to intimidate William Frazer on the roadside. The man seemed to get very agitated when asked how the smuggling business was going. A Southern Irish conflict researcher who was accompanying Mr Frazer was shocked and astounded by the venom and hate-filled comments of this man. It is a pity this did not happen 25 years ago!
