As a consequence of the terrorist atrocities that has taken place in Northern Ireland there are numerous police officers that have suffered the emotional and social symptoms of terrorist related trauma. In FAIR there are many former officers who served in the local area that have been affected in this way.
The police federation had taken up the case of officers seeking compensation for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, given the limited resources of the officers to take up the case otherwise, with the object of achieve an appropriate level of compensation for them. It has now been disclosed that the police federation has decided to drop its support for this case on the basis that it no longer has sufficient funds to see the case through. We see this as an utter disgrace and a betrayal of the men who were willing to put their lives on the line to defend law and order, and the community from terrorism and other associated crime.
When we consider the amounts of money that the government has been more than willing to through at cases like Bloody Sunday and Pat Finucane it seems monstrous that the police officers with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder should be treated in this way. We call upon the government to give a fair deal to the police officers whose lives have been disrupted and destroyed by terrorism.
