We are looking forward to seeing who the candidate is for the post of Victims Commissioner. We know quite a few people who applied and were turned down within a few days. Selection is obviously not based on what credentials you hold, in terms of innocent victims and perpetrators.
We have heard a few names of possible candidates and one of these was Alan McBride. Certainly Alan would suit the description of a victim, but he is not one who would represent the views of victims such as us. He would count terrorists as victims. We watch with interest to see who will be acceptable to Sinn Fein and the DUP.
As the organisation that first mentioned the need for a Victims Commissioner and submitted a report on the benefits of a Commissioner in the first place, we would like to think that our considerations and feelings will be taken into account, in this appointment process. However it is more likely that we are into the same situation as we were at the opening of the Assembly. On that occasion, nobody from organisations like ourselves were asked to attend (not that we would have accepted anyway), but the gesture may have gone some way to reassure victims that we were being considered. However we did notice members there of groups who in the past have locked the DUP out of their offices in Markethill, and refused to let them enter when they came to visit the area because they were strong supporters of Trimble.
