Security Shortfall Cause For Concern

The recent attacks on Police in Lurgan have shocked and distressed innocent victims in the South Armagh area. So called 'Dissident' Republicans attempts to plant a bomb outside the police station and subsequent petrol bombing/rioting highlights the continuing need for sustained levels of security in Northern Ireland.

"The fact that such attacks are possible in the Lurgan area is a major cause for concern" said FAIR director William Frazer. "Lurgan has a high level of policing with instant support available from Portadown and Lisburn. In our area police still cannot patrol the streets and roads and the security situation gets worse by the day as the Army withdraws men and equipment. Imagine what these terrorists could achieve here in the South Armagh."

FAIR notes that several families experiencing law and order problems recently in the South Armagh region are often told "we do not have available personnel" or "no helicopter is currently available".

It is time for the Government to stop fooling themselves for they are not fooling anyone else. Terrorist/Criminal activity by republicans, whether under the guise of 'dissident' or not, continues province wide. Increased, proactive security and policing to ensure the safety of the law abiding community should be the government's main priority, not pandering to the whims of Adams et al.
