In relation to yesterday’s announcement concerning the RIR financial packages, FAIR must firstly register its disappointment at the decision to disband them at all. We feel the RIR must be retained for the protection of the whole community from the continued threat of terrorism.
As a result FAIR therefore gives a cautious welcome to the package announced yesterday. It is a reasonable package for those men and women who have dedicated themselves to defence of their neighbours, to assist them to rebuild their lives and careers. It is unfortunate that there will still be some element of threat to them from Republican elements if the past evidence is anything to go by. Let us hope they can make a successful, peaceful life in the civilian world.
FAIR would also like to note our frustration that this package only serves the current members of the RIR. It would have been appropriate to also consider those past members of the RIR/UDR who served during the worst of times. Their contribution to peace has been repaid to date with suffering, traumatic memories etc.
FAIR will continue to lobby for proper recognition of those who served past and present. Let us hope we do not all live to regret the British Governments surrender of another line of defence for law and order, to appease the terrorists.
