Members of FAIR are in Messines for a Peace and Reconciliation conference to do with remembering our dead from the First World War.
A number of politicians are in attendance and also a number of representatives from across the board, to remember those who paid the ultimate sacrifice from both sides of the community.
Victims took the opportunity to remind those present that those from Ireland who served in the British army, continued to die years after the war finished. Hundreds paid the ultimate sacrifice when they returned home, being killed by Republicans.
All spoke very well when addressing those in attendance, apart from Sinn Fein who did not waste an opportunity to insult Unionists and anyone with any loyalty. On a number of occasions the Sinn Fein representative (ie. The Blonde bomber) rambled on about a 32 county Ireland and United Ireland. After the way Republicans demonised and hated Nationalists who went to fight in the great wars, one would have assumed Sinn Fein would have hung their heads in shame when addressing such a gathering. Instead they used this opportunity of remembrance to promote their political ideology and insult Unionists. There was much talk of respect from the same Sinn Fein representative, but it would seem she does not know the meaning of the word.
The same member of Sinn Fein sat beside the NIO minister in attendance and when she got up to make her address, we glanced under her seat, thinking she was maybe leaving… However, it was very good to see Nationalists and representatives from the Irish government in attendance. It would seem that they realise that it was both sides of the community that fought and died. Unfortunately Republicans have much to learn about their history and have a long way to go, as it seems they are as intent as ever in insulting Unionists.
