05.12.07 We welcome the announcement of £2million for the UDR and RIR being made available every year. Although we welcome it we see the same problems as the benevolent fund. This too is being controlled by the establishment where they will set criteria that means a lot of deserving men and women won’t benefit unless your are down and out, as they well know these people will not ask for handouts especially in the border areas where people are still too afraid to be seen associating with members of the security forces. We hope and pray that the people are not left the way the families who lost loved ones where left during the conflict, with a UDR benevolent fund sitting there with millions in it, families unable to access it and not getting any help in raising their families at a time when they needed it the most. Some of the people who set up the benevolent fund would like to know where the money is belonging to it, we hope that the same people are not put in charge of this, all it will do is gather interest. Although again we say it is very welcome, we don’t believe that many families will benefit from it.
